Normally John doesn't expect the equivalent of a psychotic break when asking "hey, pass the salt." because really, it's not that big of a deal, everyone does it and the food is a bit bland. It happens. It's not unusual.

Still though. John's kind of torn between laughing at the look on Rodney's face and the fact that he dropped his fork and managed to twang a bit of broccoli into his coffee and you know, attempting to soothe or calm or talk or something, whatever he's supposed to do when someone, Rodney especially as he's learned to live with, whom he cares about in that funny sort of way. The way that makes him contemplate going to the mall to get Rodney that coffee mug the size of a soup bowl ( ... )

Home, for both of them, has always been a “concept” thing, rather than anything they’d known firsthand. Not John, rattling from oversize house to oversize cottage to oversize apartment, hot and cold running servants and a father who ran mostly to cold. Not Rodney, whose parents never quite knew that they were parents, who never quite got the grasp of routine and order and affection ( ... )
