This week I sign a half-lease on a lovely mare. So excited to be here, three years into this horse adventure.

what a difference a year makes...

Today I saw some truly excellent frogs. 

 There's a tree on the town square that's starting to change.  It's early, and a few always jump the gun.  And yet:  a signal, a sign, of change on the horizon.  It's inevitable.  And today that makes me hopeful.

And while the sun shines, I'm going to go ride in the glorious sunshine.

 good things:

riding on a cool summer morning
a library full of books
travel to astonishing places
the kindness of old friends
unexpected hopefulness

 this was one of those years where the top film left me cold or annoyed.  True Grit was really the only one I thought was decent, and it got no recognition (predictably).  There are times you realize you are definitely not the target audience.

the key to this "let it snow" thing is having no place to go...

 Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall -  eh.  I'm not so very excited about Tudor court history but I was hoping the strength of the writing would work for me, and Thomas Cromwell is a very interesting angle given his non-noble background.  Loved the early stuff as Wolsey was falling and he was finding his place, but the later stuff and particular her ( Read more... )

I need to spend some more time sleeping in my own bed, but I've sure gotten a lot of books read.  Was so excited about the new Cherryh, and while I liked it in specific (she really can make a bumpy bus ride across hostile country gripping), I'm not sure the arc of this series is gelling for me in the way the previous ones have ( Read more... )
