New edition cover - Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone

In order to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of Harry, Scholastic is releasing new editions of all the Harry Potter books each with a brand new cover. I always loved the Mary GrandPre covers, but isn't this one gorgeous?

Maybe one of your kids will be a big fan and will want his/her very own set. (I love excuses to buy books - especially books that are beautiful to look at)

I like the cover, although I don't think it covers much new ground/insight into JKR's world. That being said, it certainly fits with the style of the movies and themepark and Pottermore. Maybe they're trying to make the brand consistent across all the mediums?

No, it doesn't really reveal anything new does it? Though this is the chapter in the book that really drew me into the world, so in some ways I love it for that.

I think it will be really interesting to see the other book covers because there are no secrets anymore. There are new readers (of course) and so for them important plot points won't appear, but there was such a shroud of secrecy over each book when it was released--do you remember how much time was spent speculating each new cover release? I think there must be a bit more freedom now.

And yes, I can totally see getting a new set for Sophie. We read the first one together already. I think I'm going to try and wait to get her the full set as a gift for her 11th birthday. Seems fitting, doesn't it? :-)

I love it! I might even like it better than the original.

We are lucky enough to have a framed original charcoal drawing of Harry by Mary Grand Pre at one of the libraries where I take Y to story time.

I really like it, maybe because I know what happens to Hedwig in the end, of maybe because of Hagrid but I would consider buying new copies - then I could 'gift' my ones to my girls *grins*

Oh, but my copies have so many memories! I'm not sure I could part with them. But it is probable that I will buy the new series for Sophie when she turns 11--that seems fitting doesn't it?

Diagon Alley ftw! I would normally think it's a bit too busy, but not when it's Diagon Alley, one of my favorite chapters in the entire series, and the one that really got me hooked.

That being said, the drawing style of this new artist is quite similar to Mary GrandPre's (at least to my non-trained eye). Harry, in particular, looks very much the same, and that's a pity. I always found the depictions of him cartoonish, and would have liked a more realistic take on him.

Yes, they do look similar. I think on purpose (the artist mentions paying homage). I like it, though. It feels familiar and warm and I think Harry has to seem squishable at this age so in that regard I love it.

I also understand your point though. If they ever animated the story, I think I would want the characters to be a bit more realistic. I think. Oh, I'm torn. I could see it both ways I guess. Gah, I'm so noncommittal! LOL
