Winter, thy enemy, thy friend - Part 1

Sandor pushed the door open, the old gnarled wood giving in reluctantly as if wanting to hold on to the secrets it held behind it.

Damp smell, musty whiff. Coarse wooden furniture knocked over, dust settled on surfaces. That mattered not.

His feet felt leaden when he stepped across the threshold and collapsed on the floor, the girl in his arms ( Read more... )

I maybe should have pointed out that I was shamelessly borrowing the castle scene from the canon... or shall we call it "homage"?

But yeah, it will take a bit more for Sandor to cross the boundaries that not only the society, but also he himself have set...

I am lucky! I am going to read all at once. And I love it!

I agree with you no kiss here. It will seem corrupted by LF shadow.

Love it. Very atmospheric. I was wondering how you were doing that but then I realized there's next to no dialogue. Interesting. :-) Please tell me that horse wasn't Stranger, though. I'm assuming/hoping not! They've certainly got a cozy little situation set up. Wonder what they'll do when they've got nothing else to do. :-)

You spotted it! I indeed try to offer little vignettes, glimpses into their life, even their dialogue being only part of that 'illustration', rather than pulling the story along as in much of my other writing. I am just playing around, really...

And no, dear gods no, the horse is definitively not Stranger! If he was, the scene would have been at a completely different level of intensity and drama.. I can't say exactly where he is, maybe 'Driftwood' is safe and sound at the Quiet Isle and this poor creature was just a horse bought for the purpose - which is sad enough...

Had they known, and had that been a cultural thing to do, they could have had dogs. The advantage of them over horses in harsh conditions being that they could be killed, one by one, and fed to the other dogs (and people) - just like Amundsen did on his victorious journey to the South Pole...

Thank you kindly! This is very introspective, in a way... like a winter buried in then snow would be, I guess!

I’ve read this first chapter yesterday and really enjoyed it. Very original structure and the idea of them being isolated from the rest of the world in a little cottage like that also appeals to me. I'll be reading the rest very soon.

Ha - this is great to hear! I was indeed playing with the structure - I sometimes have a tendency to get bogged down with details and back-stories, and I admire people who get to the point and let everything else fade into the background...and this prompt, if anything, was perfect for that!
