It is a long road. My other half went through it, but it was (in his opinion) one of the best decisions of his life.

I did mine (at least partially - mine were pretty extreme so they got mine to "relatively straight") as a teen, and it wasn't too bad. I wouldn't call it pain as much as constant pressure. Best of luck on all the little annoyances that happen, but it's not that bad.

I definitely wanted mine over and done with before the boys needed any. It's expensive!
