www.sca.org is a good place to start. You can find your local group and get the official statement of the society. I think you're in the Kingdom of Caid if you're still in So Cal.

It's basically a group of people who celebrate the middle ages as they should have been. Reinactment is a lot of fun. Get dressed up, eat good food, dance, sing, do art, fighting, heraldry, scribery... all sorts of stuff! Depending on your group, there can be a lot of fun to be had. :)
