As Merlin had imagined, as soon as Sophia’s nose stopped bleeding, she went straight to the principal’s office and rat out on the brunette.
For the first time in her entire life, Susan is called to school because her daughter just got suspended for three days. The older woman is absolutely seething.
“How could you be so stupid!?” Susan yells as soon as she and Merlin step inside the house. “You could loose your scholarship because of this!”
“I’m sorry alright!?” Merlin yells back, pissed off. Her day is getting worse by the second. “But I had enough of that fucking bitch rubbing salt in my wounds!”
“Watch your language!” Her mother warns, glaring.
“Oh, for the love of God!” Merlin rolls her eyes and crosses her arms over her chest, returning the glare.
“Go to your room. You’re grounded.” Susan finally says, pinching the bridge of her nose in exhaustion.
“Fine!” Merlin hisses angrily through clench teeth and stalks out of the room.
Merlin remains the rest of the day locked in her room. She doesn’t feel like facing her mother and she definitely doesn’t want to see Arthur after everything that has happened.
Around 9 p.m., Morgana brings up her dinner and Merlin is a little calmer. She thanks the younger girl with a smile.
“So you really punched Arthur’s ex-girlfriend?”
“Yep.” Merlin answers around a mouthful.
“Good, I always hated that bitch.” Morgana grins wickedly and Merlin chuckles. “Have you heard from Arthur tonight?”
Merlin immediately sags down at the mention of the name. Morgana frowns.
“Did I miss something?”
“We broke up.” Merlin replies in a tiny voice and Morgana rolls her eyes annoyed.
“Oh my God! What is wrong with the two of you? Why can’t you just have a normal relationship where you don’t break up every other day?”
“He remembered.” The older girl says, ignoring Morgana’s speech. “He remembered today and was absolutely mad because I didn’t tell him.”
“Oh…” Morgana answers and hugs Merlin. “Sorry.”
“Yeah, me too.” Merlin sighs, pushing the rest of her sandwich away. Suddenly she’s not hungry anymore.
It’s around 2 a.m. when Merlin comes downstairs, unable to get some sleep. Arthur’s words keep replaying themselves at her head over and over. She finds Andrew sitting on the couch in the dark.
“Andrew? What are you doing?” Merlin asks, turning on the hall light.
“Waiting for Arthur.” The man replies with a deep, tired sigh. “He’s not back yet and he’s not answering his mobile. What are you doing up?”
“Couldn’t sleep.” Merlin shrugs, taking a seat next to him. “It’s his birthday; he’s probably out celebrating or something.”
“It’s also school night; he knows he has to be back by 11.” Andrew watches Merlin from the corner of his eyes for a moment. “Morgana told me. I’m sorry.”
It’s Merlin’s turn to let out a tired sigh. “It’s okay. I’m almost getting used to this by now.” She tries to joke to lighten the mood.
“I’m sure you two will figure things out in the end.” Andrew reassures with a pat on Merlin’s knee and a smile.
“Yeah.” She replies without conviction and stands up. “I’m going back to bed for another round of tossing and turning. Good night.”
“Good night, Merlin.”
She’s not even at the stairs yet when the phone rings. Andrew picks up after the first sound.
“Yes, this is Andrew Prince.”
Merlin hears him say with a worried tone and pauses, listening in.
“What you mean? What kind of accident?”
Now there’s panic in the man’s voice and Merlin rushes back to the room, looking at Andrew questioning.
“But he’s going to be alright?”
Merlin’s heart is pounding on her chest. Fear gnawing her insides.
“Which hospital?” Andrew seems calm, but his face is pale and his hands are shaking. “I’ll be right there.”
He hangs up the phone and looks at Merlin; face haunted; eyes teary.
“Arthur crashed his car. He’s in the hospital.”
