Possibly. I keep meaning to talk to Pellinor about it, and forgetting. October is a very busy month, and we're busy, every other weekend in October. I think we're free that weekend... but my parents are plaintively asking us if there's ever going to be a chance of them visiting us for a weekend, so that one could end up being the prime candidate.
Anyway... I'll try to get an answer to you next week.
It would be nice to see you if you can make it ... but I quite understand about "only one weekend free in a month", and "parents". There's no rush to let us know.
Warkworth is one of the best castles in the country, in my opinion, but we've been there several times, and had never been to Alnwick at all, so I wanted to "do" Alnwick this time.
I expect that some adults do re-enactments for serious historial reasons, and some just because they like running around with a sword and dressing up. i.e. for "childish" reasons. However, I don't see anything wrong with that, either.
Actually, I kind of agree with people who think role-playing, re-enactment, board games etc. are "childish". I just disagree with the implication that that is bad. Tell 'em to research the role of neoteny in getting us to dominant species status :-). - Neuromancer
I don't think they're childish - or, rather, that there is only a tiny and artificial line between such actitivies, and other activities that our current society has deemed "adult". Improvisational drama: adult. Role-playing: childish. Chess: adult. War game that is just as complex as chess, but uses model soldiers: childish.
I agree, though, that there is nothing wrong with being childish. I think it is a sad thing that so many adults are so insecure in their maturity, that they're terrified of doing anything that people might think is childish.
Good! I'm always a bit worried that they will seem boring. Like, when we were away, we were sat down on the couch and shown over 500 holiday photos. For the people showing them to us, it was a chance for happy, nostalgic memories. For us, who hadn't been there, it was a bit much.
Just today I was telling Tracy at work about our laser tag outings, and how much they were. It's such a shame they don't have it here. I wish we could have done that while you and Pellinor were here.
And I totally agree about it not being fair. Adults need playgrounds, too.
Jeez... how much fun they were, is what I meant to say. Not my original comment, which makes it sound like each time we went we had to spend a fortune for the privilege of shooting each other with lasers.
They were great fun, yes! (Even though I'm pathetic at them.) It was also great fun when we went out to the woods with those laser blasters, and shot each other. There's one local place where you can do that in an organised fashion - it's just like capture the flag in Unreal, but for real. Unfortunately, you need to go along with a fully-formed party, and can't turn up as an individual.

Grown-ups are never allowed to have fun!

We did that at Inconsistent (?), the humour-in-sf-and-fantasy-con, back in 1994. Great fun!
We also played Calvinball :-)
