Warkworth is one of the best castles in the country, in my opinion, but we've been there several times, and had never been to Alnwick at all, so I wanted to "do" Alnwick this time.

I expect that some adults do re-enactments for serious historial reasons, and some just because they like running around with a sword and dressing up. i.e. for "childish" reasons. However, I don't see anything wrong with that, either.
