This week's reading, viewing etc

Jan 10, 2019 17:00

I'm three months overdue with writing up my reading. I think monthly posts are just too daunting, so I'll try to see if I can keep up with it better if I do a weekly post. I won't commit to a named day, but it might often be Thursday, since that's my free evening.

This week's reading, watching and listening )

film and tv, books 2019, games

I'm not good with audio books either, though I have one I should try and listen to. It's on cassette tape, which is probably why I've not actually done that yet!! It was the only way I could afford the book as it's one of the Doreen Tovey ones that hasn't been reprinted yet, and they can be expensive in actual book form. Too popular an author, lol!! But she does write amusing books about cats and her life in general!!

Guess I need to make that a goal for this year!!

I feel a little guilty about my inability to cope with audio books, since we (i.e. the library) offer an e-audio and e-book service, and are encouraged to make use of it ourselves so we can help customers who encounter problems. I can't use the e-book service since they don't work on old-fashioned Kindles like mine, but have no such excuse for e-audio. Oh well. At least I've tried. And I did manage to focus on about half of what was said, which is better than nothing.

I have never read any Regency-with-magic books, so that sounds very interesting. *makes a note*

Hope you like it if you read it! I'm quite fond of Regency-with-magic, which is a nice way to indulge a taste for fantasy without getting all the grimdark.

I've been intending to reread JS&MN ever since the tv show happened, but it just feels like such an intimidating commitment of time that I never seem to have - like LOTR, which always swallowed up a Whole Week even when I seemed to have more spare time.

(Although LOTR became somehow far less intimidating when I bought a copy in three volumes - I wonder if you can do something similar for JS&MN...)

There are two authors I know who gather all their characters together in order for chaos and/or comedy to ensue - DWJ and Georgette Heyer. I wonder which inspired this author - or maybe both!

Well, JS&MN does indeed have three named parts, though I think if they were published separately, it would very much draw attention to the fact that so little happens. Somehow it feels different to get a third of the way into a large book and think, "well, not much has happened yet" than to get to the last page of a slimmer volume. I like slow books, and I am enjoying it... but I can't help but think that it could easily be half the length without losing much.

Where IS Galavant? I've been vaguely looking out for it since you mentioned it first, and am still yet to spot it.

We found it a year ago on Amazon.com, as a Region 1 DVD. It's still there, although it appears to have become more expensive and elusive than it was a year ago. It's such a shame it's not more readily available in the UK, since it was filmed here and is full of UK actors in guest roles.

Once we've done our rewatch, I'm happy to pop it in the post and lend it to you, if you like.

I would be interested in a borrow, once your rewatch is done!

I started listening to Naxos audio books as a necessary evil a few years ago when I had eyestrain and couldn't read in the evenings, but now I find I actually prefer listening to Charles Dickens read aloud - the complexity of the prose becomes a joy when someone else is doing all the hard work of reading it for me!

Yes, Regency-with-magic is quite a thing now. Sorcery and Cecelia is probably still my favourite.

Ah yes. Sorcery and Cecelia. I'd forgotten about that series when I was musing yesterday about Regency-with-magic I Have Known. I've own them all, so will try to remember to reread them soon.
