But if they are only *slightly* different shades of blue, is anyone really going to notice?

You can't do that, you don't know *where* it might lead!

It turns out that a difference that is only very subtle in a drawer in dim morning light is a LOT more obvious when standing in an office in full sunlight. Or maybe they're magic socks that only reveal their true nature when touched by a sunbeam.

I try to buy all the same color of socks (really dark blue), but shades vary. From the drawer I grab the best matches I can and then don't worry about it.

Ah yes, I had some black socks once. Got rid of them due to the 'are these yours or mine' dilemma! I now have blue socks, though I tend to buy socks that look different (shade-wise or via the toe colour) to make matching easier. I think, given some socks such as those your Mum gave you, I'd struggle too.

When I eventually am well enough to work again, I guess I'll need black socks... with colourful toes that no one can see!

Side note: hubby has black socks for work and blue socks for the weekend, but brought navy blue ones last time. Matching them is a pain in the neck, I have to do that in the daytime as electric light makes it harder - navy and black are soooo similar!! If only I could get him to be like Pellinor... no more matching *sigh*

I recommend the happy animal socks from Sainsbury's: outwardly black and respectable, but when you cross your legs and your trousers ride up a little bit, there's a happy, smiley little tiger grinning away on your ankle.

At least I've never been caught out as badly as my Mum was by the similarly of black and navy. She came to my graduation wearing odd shoes, one black and one navy, and only noticed when she reached Oxford. Of course, once she'd noticed, she became so desperately aware of it that she had to go straight to a shoe shop to buy new shoes.

A few days ago, I got dressed in half-light ... and went to work wearing blue pinstripe trousers and a grey pinstripe jacket.

I think happy smiling tigers sound lovely! I'll have to see if my Sainsburys has them! :D

LOL! My children laugh at me because I am obsessed about matching socks. When they were smaller, I always bought the same kind of sport socks so they could do like Pellinor. Then the companies started changing up the design ever so slightly. Then kids thought they should have some say over what socks they owned. As long as I'm folding the laundry, they still get matched socks. The rest of the time, I avert my eyes.
