Storm damage

Feb 19, 2014 17:12

Today I found myself with an hour to kill on the south coast, in between storytimes, so stopped en route to look at some of the changes the recent weather has wrought. I couldn't get to the big things: the big cliff falls, the collapsed sea walls, and, worst of all, the stretch of main road - full of houses - that has half disappeared. ( But I did get a few pictures of the somewhat less drastic things: )

photos, current affairs, vectis, weather

Oh boy, the island has definitely had it bad by the looks of it. Scary stuff - and now I'm wondering how much land Blackgang Chine has lost this year!

That last photo is gorgeous, which beach is it?

That's Ventnor, taken from just outside the Spyglass Inn, whose outdoor terrace is situated a little to the right of this picture, and is definitely one of the most scenic places to eat on the island.

I haven't heard about any fresh big falls at Blackgang, but that doesn't mean there haven't been any. The big one is the main road between Ventnor and Niton, where quite a few houses have been evacuated by the army, and the householders are unlikely to ever be allowed back. The entire town centre of Cowes was under two feet of water on Friday/Saturday, too, including all the shops.

Ventnor - must put that Inn on my 'to go to one day' list.

I feel bad for those home owners, though - that must be beyond terrible.

Yeah. A recently retired colleague moved house last year, and was considering buying one of the houses in the evacuated area. Fortunately for her, she went for one a few hundred yards away instead, and a little bit further inland.

That is some scary damage - houses and seawalls disappearing...

I think we may have escaped lightly - the storms ate about ten feet of the dune system and all the warning signs that "Naturists may be seen beyond this point".

I hope it didn't also eat the naturists!
