Taken from lyssie This is apparently shocking news to this "writer" by name of Vanetta Rogers:

Fangirl Invasion of SDCC

*snort*  They only just noticed this at SDCC?  I was there in '06 & almost half, if not more than half the crowd was female.

Obviously, they don't know that the person behind the campaign to save TOS Star Trek - was a woman.  Or that we' ( Read more... )

women are "new" to fandom, news, fandom

This article is just a repeat on a theme.

All these "fanboys" are growing up and having their eyes opened when they get out into the "real world" that yeah, the female part of the population is just as big, if not more so, a part of the "geek culture" now.

We've always been here, it's just that it's always "new" and a "Great Discovery" by these dweebs and some editor or publisher go, "OMG! You are so right, dude! Go! Run with it!" (Always blind to the dozens of other articles that are already out there on the very same thing.... :-p)

True that....

Brad Wright is apparently trying the art of distraction by giving us his new "shiny!" (the mockery that is SGU) to deny that has said things like, "There isn't enough fan interest," in doing an SGA movie.

(On one hand, I'm rather afraid of what they will do to SGA, on the other, that was one hell of a fireball they dropped into Earth's atmosphere... there has got to be some fallout from that!)

Ugh, that annoys me so much. My fannish experience has always tended towards the 90%+ female side so I'm generally astounded when certain people get all "omg, there are female geeks too?!"

lord. I still remember the first comic book convention I went to. It was 1980. The reaction my sister and I got was the same "girls. At a comicbook convention" as if we were some alien species showing up.

And I'll also admit back then, it was difficult being female and going to those things. Whenever I showed my art, I was always told "You draw like a girl", whatever the heck that meant. Oh wait, I didn't draw women with utterly unrealistic breast size, just marginally unrealistic. ;)
