The Angels Take Manhattan

Sep 29, 2012 15:54

I watched on a really crappy proxy stream, and I got like five hours of sleep last night, so this is probably not super coherent.  But anyway, initial reactions!  Largely cut-and-pasted from my responses to other people's reaction posts, as that's one way to collect your thoughts....

spoilers under the cut! )

eleven, doctor who, amy, river song, rory

If Rory still died in 1938, that means the Ponds would have landed back somewhere in the 1880s is my guess.

Oh, he died in 1938. But that's assuming that they got sent back once, then caught in the past and sent back again, which is what was going to happen to cause him to die in 1938 in the first place, and they said their life was okay, so I'm assuming they're not always running from the Angels.

The nice thing about past New York is that I think it's a compromise between the things Amy and Rory have always wanted--a little bit of adventure, a little bit of normality. And now they will be able to settle down without always waiting to hear the TARDIS.
Yes, exactly this! I thought that was very nicely done.

I'm going to adopt bendingwind's fic as their way of raising Melody.

With them building the orphanage to make sure she has a place to grow up safe? Yeah, that was sweet.

Yes, that fic! If they can't physically raise her...

Yeah. I like to think they got to do something for her, one way or another. I mean, she got to grow up with them, but they didn't know they were giving her that, and so it didn't really mean anything to them.

Oh, I'd not thought about Rory and Amy meeting up with River in past New York. Ha, that could work too... is it still 1969 when River "dies" in the alley? And if so, Amy and Rory could find her, then pick her up and take care of her as a little girl, and then send her off to Leadworth to meet up with them as kids again. Um, assuming Melody ages really slowly? Arg, I'm going to retconn things in my mind until this works...

That's what a lot of people who got spoiled were hoping for really hard. It could still be headcanoned to work. But I can't figure out how if she did that, she wouldn't have gotten over her programming by the time LKH rolled around.

I think that it was around 1930s that they got zapped to the second time around? Just seeing how they appeared to be in the same city or setting or something, but that could be a stretch. But that'd mean they get stuck in WWII, the Red Scare/Cold War, lack of woman's rights, polio and influenza...

I don't think it'd be actually possible to have Melody meetup with the Ponds, since the way she phrased it made it sound like she had only regenerated once prior to turning into River, but that'd also mean that she would've been a lot older by the time she meet Amy and Rory in Leadsworth? And that'd not account for her general mannerisms and apparent lack of care in regards to killing the Doctor.

I think 1930s is a pretty safe bet. The typewriter Amy had looked old-ish. And, I mean, there were a lot of crappy things in the past, but if you took your grandkids and dropped them now, they'd say the same about 2012. I think there are lots of fun possibilities--Amy going all Rosie the Riveter, and Rory being an awesome medic in a military hospital, and both of them not really caring about outdated gender norms and just being their fantastic selves even if everyone thinks they're weird. It'd be tough at times, but if anyone could make it work, it'd be Amy and Rory--if you can make it as a 2000-year-old plastic Roman and a middle-aged robot-fighting DIY ninja, you can do anything, right? :P ( ... )
