My Sockapalooza socks came in the mail today, all the way from new Zealand!  With them came some tasty New Zealand kiwi candy and hand cream, as well as some soft black sock yarn.  Pictures are up on my knitting Flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/11493159@N05/

my mom was a knitter when i was Very Small, but now she is a quilter instead. she does those swappy-things often! usually it's swapping blocks to put together yourself into big quilts, but sometimes it's for smaller things.

she just had a houseguest from australia for the weekend...a woman she did a swap with two years ago! they each did the center for a wallhanging-sized project and sent that off, then they each did the borders around the other person's center and sent it back, and then they each finished their own. afterwards, mom and this woman stayed in touch, and when she was putting together a visit to the states (visiting relations and sightseeing) she factored in a long weekend to meet mom in person and see a bit of the South.

That's really cool, that they've kept in touch so long after the swap, and so closely! Its amazing to me how crafting can really bring people together, especially since the advent of blogs and LJ communities and such, who would never have met otherwise. I suppose that's equally true of all special interest groups...

I know few people in person that knit, and none that I could call in the middle of the night if I had a question - but I can just hop on the intarweb and ask, because there's sure to be someone else awake and willing to help.
