I'm so fine with a commute--I commute an hour+ every day already so anything else would probably be an upgrade! I'm just so ready for a place of my own, so long as it doesn't have flesh eating monsters for neighbors, I'm A-OK ;;;
Find a friend who wants to move with you, to split the costs. If you have no friends who want to be roomies, scour craigslist for the least creepy/coolest person who needs a roomie.
I was terrified of the entire "living on my own" process until I actually moved out and discovered that it's really not that hard.
If you are looking to get into an apartment on a new lease, you stand a good chance of needing a broker, a significant amount of spare cash (say $5K depending on various factors) and someone willing to be the guaranteur on a lease.
If you are looking to get a room in an existing lease, your life will be easier, of course.
If you want to be in Manhattan your options are limited to East Side above 100th Street and West Side above 140th.
Queens has options. Brooklyn has options, but they are longer commutes. I do not know enough about the Bronx to give you info, and I do not acknowledge Staten Island.
Okay but yes, definitely not going to move in alone, just need to find something in a safe neighborhood. I so don't need to be trendy, I just need my own stupid space. It is time. IT IS TIME.
NYC is the safest big city in America. And while I live in an area that technically has a lot of crime, the reality of crime is that it mostly happens within ethnic groups (despite what we're taught to believe) and I'm about the last person they are going to fuck with in my neighborhood. Also, I live on a huge 2-way street -- you'd have to be a moron to do something fucked up on my block.

Also, one would hang out with one. One of the ones being you, one of the ones being me. Just sayin'.

Also: be willing to live with numerous people, love the boroughs, and be willing to love your commute.
