If you can find a few people you get along with, that's the way to go. The more bedrooms you have, the cheaper it is per person. I have a few friends that were looking at a 5 bedroom mansion of an apartment, and would be paying about 4-500 per person per month.
Also, will you seek out gainful employment, or will your writing support you?
If you want, come out with us one friday, you can meet all the people involved and discuss stuff with them. If nothing else, they know a lot and could give you some advice.
Your options will also depends on how gainful your employment is.
I know up in Yonkers we're developing new apartment buildings along the waterfront. It'd be kind of 'spensive, but a lot of the new ones are right next to the train station, which is also the first stop on the express Hudson line and it has a great view of the Palisades. :D
Brooklyn I don't know so much about, it just felt appropriate to bellow, but I know there's a total range of neighborhoods and if you find the right spot, it's nice and affordable. :)
brooklyn is where it's at. hey. you're from brooklyn.
basically i dont' know what kind of budget you're working with, but last time, my roommates found a broker. brokers are sleazy unctuous people and they're very expensive, but they find you nice places.
also, if you can devote 1-2 weeks to it, you can scour craigslist. in that caseyou might end up with a fee apt. anyway, but you can also meet a lot of shared room situations and see what you want.
I would craigslist either bumblefuck queens or washington heights/inwood.
I'm partial to wash heights--seeing as how I live there and have a relatively affordable 3 bedroom with two other students-- because there be express trains here, so I can get downtown without too much hassle. Live on the A and your life will be loverly. :-) (however, bumblefuck queens is cheap like a cheap thing if you're lucky)
I love living in Wash Heights. I mean, I'm lucky because most of my college friends ended up moving either here or Hamilton Heights so I have my social network within walking distance, but that aside, the neighbourhoods up here are very nice and mostly friendly. There's, like, only one Starbucks in the area at all, it's safe, and the old architecture is gorgeous.
Also, since there are a number of schools in the area (City college, Columbia med, Yeshiva, and the community college across the street from me that I'm spontaneously blanking on...) there are a lot of students or former students looking for housing shares, in my experience.
In any city (or in for your first place in general) the best bet is always to live with someone else first. Or bunches of someone elses. I don't live in New York, but my town is also hella-expensive for your first time.
