I have very similar reactions as you from watching the movie last night. I LOVED the first one, so I was nervous about the sequel. Honestly, though, I was really impressed. I think I may need to see it another time or two because I was so like "OMG STAR TREK" that I don't think everything hit me the way it may have normally.
But yeah, I really liked the movie and some of the dialogue and character interactions were AMAZING. And the scene with Spock and Kirk before he died was seriously beautiful and heartbreaking. Also just any scene with Spock, because I love him hahaha.
I gotta say, STID and Iron Man 3 are providing to blueprint to how to make a sequel that's sure to be dark; add some humor! They both made great use of banter to counteract the 'ouch' moments (and there were plenty of those). I love how this cast has meshed, they have clearly become a band of brothers (and sisters).
I knew Cumberbatch would be fucking brilliant, and he didn't disappoint. Yeah he's no Montalban, but he's still Cumberbatch. I thought it a brave choice to make Khan more sympathetic. Yeah he's a megalomanic superman, but he was also dealt a bad hand. If this movie shows anything, it's that it's dangerous to mess with someone's family, especially if that someone is Khan or Spock.
I totally need to see this movie again. Yeah I'm sure there are holes in the story (why didn't they just treat Jim with the blood of one of the other frozen superbeings?), but it's still a great summer blockbuster. I'm stoked for J.J.'s Star Wars, and I hope he'll be able to make time for both franchises.
I agree. I know I use that in my stories too; have some humor to offset the darkness (um, no pun intended all things considered), and INTO DARKNESS did that amazingly. I know stuff like Bones' metaphors, Bones flirting with Carol Marcus, etc. we're some really good examples. (And drunk Scotty. That was also great. XD) And yes, the banter was phenomenal. :) And so agreed with you regarding the cast -- they really feel like they've become a family. For all intents and purposes, they are the crew of the ENTERPRISE, really
( ... )
Oh, it's when they're down on the planet sort of figuring out the torpedoes and everything, and Bones starts hitting on Carol. Sort of trying to impress her and all, also known as one of those moments in the theater where I could not stop laughing. XD (I think that's really the key to handling Darker and Edgier stuff -- add humor to lighten things a bit) And yeah, I was shipping Kirk and Carol also. (Also, Carol is one of my new favorite female characters. Seriously)

Although I didn't really notice Bones flirting with Carol which means I'll have to go watch it again! ;) (I found myself shipping Kirk with Carol.)
