In the empty lab, Lex lay back on the cot and unbuttoned his slacks. Tonight had been rough, but he’d held his own and fended off two of those masked terrorists. He’d put a tracker on his little bird, and so he now knew that his schoolyard tormentor was the ridiculous dandy behind the Green Arrow. Typical.

And Clark had been forced to intervene to save his new billionaire best friend’s ass. From what Lex could tell, Clark wasn’t part of Queen’s team, either. Excellent.

Lex pulled out a tube of gel and squirted some onto his hand.

Not to mention his surveillance on Lana had revealed trouble in paradise. She’d soon be out of Clark’s life; Lex could tell. The woman was poison. Entropy itself. She had merely been holding him back from his destiny, and she was holding Clark back from his own.

All in all, it had been a good day.

After rubbing the gel onto his bare stomach, he leaned over and turned on his machine. Mutants like him could hardly afford to visit hospitals, and he’d had enough doctors go rogue on him that he certainly wasn’t about to trust any of them with his physical well-being.

Lex thinned his lips and tilted his head to the side as he pressed the wand to his abdomen and looked for internal bleeding. He felt all right, and his minor bruises were already healing, but one could never be too certain.

He had to admit that he was glad to have discovered that Lana’s powers had sucked in Clark’s double. Lex was in no way eager to meet up with that thing again. He had too much to lose, these days.

“Oh…” Lex breathed, gluing his eyes to the screen. He turned the dial for the sound, and the sound of two strong heartbeats filled the air.

For a little while, he’d been rather worried that the fight might have hurt his children.

They were, however, such a tenacious pair of little fetuses. Lex had spent so many nights in utter panic over what that alien had left inside him. Growing. Feeding off of him. He’d given himself all manner of abortives. He’d been sure when Knox attacked him that they would be damaged, but nothing had seemed to cause them any harm.

Now, as he watched them, Lex couldn’t be more relieved. During the fight he’d fallen right on his stomach, and to his amazement, he’d felt a stab of fear unlike any other he’d ever experienced. He couldn’t lose them now. Not now that he’d lost everyone else. They were getting bigger, so much bigger. He felt heavy, weighty, even though he’d only begun to show. And when he felt them move…

It was the only time he didn’t feel alone.

They were aliens. They were monsters. But they were Lex’s. They were his, and they were all he had. Even more, the thing that had been in Clark’s body wasn’t Clark, but it had been using Clark’s DNA. So…

They were Clark’s. Though it was not how he would have chosen to be together with his former best friend, he had a piece of Clark inside him. Two beautiful little lives.

“Julian. Lillian. I’m sorry about the rough ride earlier,” he whispered, his eyes shifting from side to side as he watched the twins. “I’ll try harder to protect you.”

Lex drew in a slow, deep breath. He didn’t want to stop watching them, maybe ever. He could hardly wait to see them, hold them. He’d already converted the old nursery to make room for them both. The best part of this arrangement was that he wouldn’t have to share his children with a jealous, conniving woman. They were all his. The last Julian had said that he was desperate enough to create someone to love him. As he lay there, watching his baby boy suck his thumb in rapt fascination, Lex supposed it was true. He supposed he’d gone mad.

It didn’t matter.

“Well, darlings, I think I have to go now, but I’ll keep talking to you. I need to get us some dinner. You both make me very tired. I still love you, though. Oh…” Lex smiled, watching little Lillian move. Her hands were clutching her head. “My sweet darlings.”

Lex put the wand away and wiped off his abdomen, then headed out of the lab, singing softly to his little cuckoos, nestled deep inside him. Somehow, he felt happier than he’d felt in years. The endorphins they released into his blood kept him smiling when he might have been screaming irrationally or pointing a gun under his chin. He couldn’t kill himself while his children needed him. He would do anything, simply anything, to keep them safe and content.

He didn’t know that they were slowly killing him, gradually draining the life out of him as they grew towards viability.
