Rare Moment
Cameron was laughing. There was a bottle of water sitting on the table in front of her along with a mostly-eaten pizza. Chase and Foreman had amused expressions on their faces, both men had taken off their ties and unbuttoned their collars. She was telling them a story from her childhood, about how she had been too afraid to ride the giant Ferris wheel until her father had taken her on it. She was recounting the story with careful detail.
House was eavesdropping from his office. None of them seemed to be aware that he was there, seated at his desk and idly tossing the oversized tennis ball in his hands. He had limped into his office several minutes ago and simply hadn’t made his presence known. It was rare for him to hear his fellows talk like that. Casual, happy, and not worried about waiting for lab results, or if a patient’s life was in jeopardy. They had just finished a case involving a young girl, which was probably what had sparked the whole conversation about theme parks and fairgrounds.
He could almost picture Cameron as a young girl, her long hair flying around her face as the wind carried it in waves. Her eyes were wide open with a mixture of fear and curiosity reflecting in them, and occasionally she looked back at her father for reassurance. House almost felt as though he was intruding upon a very private moment, but that didn’t stop him from listening to every word she said.
Her laughter was echoing in from the other room as she finished her story. For a brief moment, the corners of his mouth turned up into the ghost of a smile. It quickly faded when the sounds of chairs being pushed back hit his ears.
“Oh, hi.” She smiled, peering into his office, “I didn’t know you were here.” Residual laughter was still in her voice.
“Do Ferris wheels still scare you?” House asked, after catching his tennis ball.
For an instant she looked surprised before realizing that he had been listening to her story. She smiled again.
“Every single time.”
