Cadence
The weather was pleasant and warm, with just enough breeze to keep things comfortable. Cameron was running, her iPod holster securely anchored to her upper arm. The song thumped rhythmically in her ears with each breath and step that she took. She loved running around the PPTH campus on days like this. It was a stress reliever from work and afforded her a bit of time to herself.
She didn’t see him seated at a bench, sipping on a venti coffee from Starbucks. Cameron almost ran past him when she felt the sharp sting of an object hitting her shins. She stopped abruptly, turning her head to look at the source. A frown crossed her face.
“You could have said ‘Hello’ rather than beating me with your cane.” She was breathless and didn’t bother to turn off her music or take out her headphones.
“What would the fun be in that?” House retorted, a smirk on his face.
Cameron began pacing to slow down her heart rate. “At least then I wouldn’t have bruises on my shins.” She replied dryly. Her voice was a bit louder than normal. “What are you doing out here?”
“Enjoying the view.”
She rolled her eyes and sat down on the bench.
House leaned over to look at the iPod on her arm. “Serendipity?” He asked, quirking an eyebrow.
“Yeah, by Pete Tong. It’s got a good cadence for running.” She shrugged.
“Cadence?” House snorted.
“You didn’t listen to music when you went running?” She asked. Her tone of voice was cautious.
He didn’t say anything and looked down at his cane, tapping it a few times on the ground. “I did.” He replied finally.
“Then you know exactly what I mean.” Her breathing was more normal now.
He nodded and sipped on his coffee.
Cameron stood up from the bench. “I should go grab a shower and get back inside. Hopefully I’ll have some lab results waiting for me.”
“I hope I didn’t mess up your cadence.” House smirked.
“Since when would that bother you?” She replied with a smirk of her own. She turned and began jogging toward the hospital locker rooms.
