Heh, at least you didn't have to wait, I started reading about a month after the first one came out, but the killer wait was after the second one. XD I cried when Rue died.
I was at the midnight release for Mockingjay and saw Suzanne Collins briefly in NYC as I got my book stamped. :) That night I stayed up with friends to read and it took me a bit to realise what happened and that Prim died, as I was getting sleepy. At that point, I had mini-nap and then went to reread that part (and later that part to the end) because my sleep-deprived brain didn't comprehend what was going on at first. :P
I very rarely cry at books, but if any moment in the first book brought me close, it was definitely Rue's death. I mean, you knew it was coming, but still. And the flowers, and the song... guh. (I've seen this awesome t-shirt with the Mockingjay symbol and Rue's song on it, I'm tempted to nab it to wear at the movie premiere.)
I kind of wish I'd been around when the books were coming out - a midnight release would've been fun!
Even knowing it was coming, I remember Rue's death being heart-wrenching, especially with the flowers and song....
The midnight release for the last book was fun! The last one I was at before this was for Deathly Hallows. It was interesting being on the fringe of fandom and noticing the hardcore fans really getting into it. :) Some dressed up, like one dressed up in Katniss's wedding dress with some of the feathers showing.
When the time came for Suzanne to read a bit of the first chapter before midnight, my friends and I stayed in the back but a lot of people rushed to the front - no matter where you where, you could hear her read, and it was great. Also fun to note was that we found other Potter fans there - heh!
These books have been on my todo list forever and I really hope the movies go nuclear, although like everyone else I am disappointed but not surprised by the casting.
You've read The Poisonwood Bible? Far out! Doesn't it just cut your soul?
I don't have much of an opinion either way on the casting so far. I've not seen any of the actors in anything, so I can't judge their talent. Things like skin tone and hair/eye color can be cosmetically altered. My only nit so far is that Lawrence may be a bit too old to convincingly play a 16-year old girl, but we'll see.
The Poisonwood Bible is possibly my favorite book ever - it's just amazing on so many levels. I read it at least once a year. Another example of a book with strong yet flawed heroines and amazing characterization, all realized with a dreamy, poetic prose. Love, love, love it.
Like I said, I haven't read the books but from what I gathered from racebending, Katniss is olive-skinned and dark-haired and less 'blue eyed, blonde looking' than her mother (who is from the better districts and married 'down') and her sister who takes more after her mother and 'passes'. Seeing that it's a futuristic society and ethnic lines are less defined, Katniss did not have to be played by a Caucasian actress and there was no reason that the casting call specifically requested that only Caucasians need apply. That's the main grouse with Lawrence (as well as her age which reduces the 'shock' value of children killing each other): not so much that a White girl was cast, but that the casting call locked out everybody who was not White from the start

Sorry. Got sidetracked by the soapbox. I was going to rec you a fic.
I've only ever read one Hunger Games fic. The series was so complete in itself, I did't feel the need to look for more. But I know this author from the Twifandom, so I read this when she posted it. It's amazing.
As Collins herself is doing the script for the movie, I think they've got a fair shot at being true to the books. And I'm happy with the casting choices so far - honestly, I don't get what's got everyone's knickers twisted.
I have a lovely one-shot to recommend, fanfic wise, if you're at that point.
I'm glad Collins is involved in the filmmaking process - that's how it should be. I can't say anything one way or another on the casting yet, since I'm not familiar with any of the actors. Lawrence isn't my mental picture of Katniss, but then, as the HP movies have proved, an actor doesn't necessarily have to match my mental picture to do justice to the character.
And yes, rec away! I've done some digging for fic so far, but haven't really been sure where to look. (And I hate sifting through The Pit.)
honestly, I don't get what's got everyone's knickers twisted.People are upset because the casting call for Katniss was basically, "White girls only need apply" but the character as described in the book is a darker skinned, darker haired girl than her blonde-haired blue-eyed mother. The description could have fit a biracial actress or a Hispanic one. Yes, that description also fits White people, particularly of Italian/Spanish descent, but it's not only White people it fits. And the silent implication of the casting call: that: 1, White is default; and 2, White is the 'realistic' color for protagonists - is what got people upset
