These books have been on my todo list forever and I really hope the movies go nuclear, although like everyone else I am disappointed but not surprised by the casting.

You've read The Poisonwood Bible? Far out! Doesn't it just cut your soul?

I don't have much of an opinion either way on the casting so far. I've not seen any of the actors in anything, so I can't judge their talent. Things like skin tone and hair/eye color can be cosmetically altered. My only nit so far is that Lawrence may be a bit too old to convincingly play a 16-year old girl, but we'll see.

The Poisonwood Bible is possibly my favorite book ever - it's just amazing on so many levels. I read it at least once a year. Another example of a book with strong yet flawed heroines and amazing characterization, all realized with a dreamy, poetic prose. Love, love, love it.

Like I said, I haven't read the books but from what I gathered from racebending, Katniss is olive-skinned and dark-haired and less 'blue eyed, blonde looking' than her mother (who is from the better districts and married 'down') and her sister who takes more after her mother and 'passes'. Seeing that it's a futuristic society and ethnic lines are less defined, Katniss did not have to be played by a Caucasian actress and there was no reason that the casting call specifically requested that only Caucasians need apply. That's the main grouse with Lawrence (as well as her age which reduces the 'shock' value of children killing each other): not so much that a White girl was cast, but that the casting call locked out everybody who was not White from the start ( ... )

Sorry. Got sidetracked by the soapbox. I was going to rec you a fic.

I've only ever read one Hunger Games fic. The series was so complete in itself, I did't feel the need to look for more. But I know this author from the Twifandom, so I read this when she posted it. It's amazing.

No problem. I get what people are upset about, but... what's done is done.

Thanks for the rec! I enjoyed it. I know what you mean about the series being so complete. After this rec, I've now read only two full-length fics, both covering the same general premise: what led into the final "Real" Katniss/Peeta moment. If I read more fic, I suspect it'll be to scratch an itch for more K/P. ;)
