I have a Janome MyLock 634D which is similar if you have questions about it. I think for home sewing it is a good machine although it sometimes fails me when it gets too hot (but I serge for literally hours daily, and it is not made for that level of wear).

If it is panties you want to make for yourself, you really only need a machine with zigzag stitch. But anything with longer seams like t-shirts or skirts etc. a serger is very handy. I find a serger is too clumsy for most doll sewing though.

It is absolutely okay to go try the machines and not buy. That is why they are there...it's like test driving a car. Surely you don't feel you have to buy a car from a specific dealer just because you tried it out there, if you find a better price elsewhere! Don't feel bad about going back and trying them again at the same store. You are truly shopping, not pretending to want to buy one, you know?
