While I'm not familiar with the comics canon here, I'm immediately drawn to this hero as you describe her. The detail of her stepfather being a drunken *educated* lout stands out since it means that his intellect is one of the ways he makes himself seem superior to her. It's all the sweeter when she can best him at his own game!

I like the fact that you portray her as well-rounded, bringing brains as well as brawn to her heroic efforts. And bonus points for the Latin! (And I appreciate the Biblical resonance in the title.)
