Author's Notes: Writen for
the Vocabulary Drabble meme, for
mike_mccall for the word "virago" :)
She looks at herself in the mirror. She has the costume - and she has to admit, the wig is a nice touch - she has the equipment, now all she needs is the crowning touch: the name.
She's been called a lot of things in her life - mostly by her drunken, over-educated, misogynistic step-father.
Her eyes go wide at the recollection of a treasured moment when she'd gotten one over on the bastard. He'd been throwing around high-brow synoyms for "bitch" again, and this time she was ready for him, having done a little research. When he got around to one of his perpetual favourites, she snapped back "actually, the original meaning of that is of a strong, capable woman, eaqual or greater in strength to a man. In the Latin bible it's used to refer to Eve, and all women, because Dixitque Adam hoc nunc os ex ossibus meis et caro de carne mea haec vocabitur virago quoniam de viro sumpta est - 'Adam said: This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man'"
She grins at her reflection in the mirror, savouring the memory of his stupid, gaping face. He never called her any kind of idiot after that.
Right, she thinks decisively, Virago it is, then.
Virago does a last check of her equipment before sliding out into the Philidelphia night, intent on bringing her strength to bear on other bulies who badly need a taking-down.
Showin' a little love to my fave obscure DC backgound character.
