He's a DAD? If you tell me he's a very young single dad who's trying his damndest but doesn't always have it together I'm going to have to give up and increase my monthly comic expenditure.

Dude, got it in one. He's got a daughter whose mother is an assassin who nuked a country. And she's the cutest damned thing EVER. Witness the cute that kills me. PENGUINS. And he has background checks done on her friends' parents. ::loves::

Never mind that there is no canonical mention of his mother, his father died in a forest fire when he was 2, he was raised by a Navajo medicine man until he was 12 or 13, then he was taken in by Green Arrow (aka Oliver Queen, billionaire) and became "Speedy." Except Ollie's kind of negligent and Speedy was a member of the Teen Titans but they broke up and Ollie was gone more than he was there and so Roy got addicted to heroin and when Ollie found he kicked him out and then Roy wound up kicking the habit, and he was a drummer in a band called "Great Frog" and he worked for the government for a while which is how met Lian's mom and guh. ::flail:: Seriously. zoe_chan hasn't heard anything but RoyRoyROY from me for two weeks now. =P I have a few really good Roy fic recs here.Canonically, he's

Oh, yay! I'm so glad you liked it!

...but I'm sure all of them have had moments like this and seeing Roy have a moment like this really dug at me.

Thank you! I think Roy tries really hard to come across as braver and stronger and less emotional than he really is (especially at this age), but I think at the heart of it, he's very emotional. He just hides it if he can.

And I really like that Dick was there in the end, because he needs somebody.

He did, and I originally planned on Dick featuring much more prominently in this, but I'm happy with how it turned out, and I'm glad you liked it.

I'm really glad you picked out the Ollie references, too, because I wanted to include that without being heavy-handed with it.

GUH! Oh, okay, you know how sometimes you write a story and you want to put all kinds of things in it and touch on all these issues but not in a heavy-handed manner and you don't know if you accomplished it and you have to prevent yourself from jumping around pointing and saying "look! did you see what I did here?!" And then you write the world's longest run-on sentence about it?

And then you know how it feels when someone reads it and NOTICES ALL THOSE THINGS?!

I'm just kind of sitting here grinning to myself like an idiot.

And yeah, I haven't read much beyond what I've found online because this is a *very* recent addiction--or, anyway, I've kind of held a long-standing love for Dick since childhood but I was a little intimidated. And then I was working on a really crazy Batman Begins/Superman Returns Bruce/Richard crossover fic and Dick kept poking me in the head, so I went searching for fic about him and THAT is how I found Roy and. um. Right now I'm in the "find everything you can about him and devour it because you're in mad-mad-crazy-mad LOVE with this character" phase. =P And if I had more money, I would SO hit up my comic store and get my hands on everything I could. ;)

And yay! A new friend! Friending you back, if that's all right, as I have a Marvel-and-HP-skewed flist and I'm definitely looking for DC friends! ;)

Thanks for the links, too! It's always nerve-wracking when I dip my toes into a new fandom. But I definitely plan on revisiting these boys.
