You know, I would never have considered the Japanese version of this movie subtle. But compared to the American one?

Suddenly I see how subtle it was.

Did this movie bomb? Tell me it bombed. 'Cause it sucks.

ETA: The 1946 French Beauty and the Beast on the other hand....Wow.

I watched the Japanese version and cried. For like, half an hour afterward. This one? Was just cheesy and lame.

I've never seen the French one but I heard it was revolutionary, especially for reinventing the fairytale tropes. I want to see it so badly, or at least re-watch the eighties American version with Rebecca DeMornay.
