Quilt tops

Dec 16, 2006 01:46

As of this evening, I've now completed the piecing of the 3 full size quilt tops for the kids for xmas. Tomorrow will be adding the batting and the backing fabrics, pinning all three layers together and machine quilting. Sunday will hopefully find me hand sewing the binding so I can ship on Monday. Pics to follow before shipping.

I've got 5 more squares to zip together then I can finish off the top. Because this place is so damn small I have to bring the top, batting and backing to Ark's parent's house so I can put it together. I'm not going to do regular quilting (since I'm a rank amature and this is too big of a project for me to get my feet wet on) but I'll tie it off while I'm at his parent's house too.

Quick question for you though, do I tie off first then do the hand sewing to close the opening I turned with, or close that off first?

I don't use the turn inside out method for my bindings. I would think that since you've already sewn the other seams before flipping that you'd just go ahead and sew closed your opening then do your tying.
Here is a link to the technique I use for bindings.

the 2nd page of this has the directions in an easy to follow manner.
When I'm doing it this way, I'm layering everything the way it will be when finished, pinning, quilting (either tying or machine stitching), then machine sewing the binding to all 3 layers, folding it back to cover the seam and hand stitching it down all the way around...per those directions in the site above. A little more time consuming because of the hand sewing, but I like the look of it.

One change to those directions that I've made is that I use a continuous strip of binding and mitre the corners as I stitch it to the quilt.
