And that means school starts. Not that it didn't go on for eight weeks during the summer, but those eight weeks are extremely different. This marks the first day of the standard 180 days of school. There are MCAS scores to share with staff and students. There are pre-assessments to give. Homework to assign. A room to decorate. Some of which ( Read more... )

Good luck with Lord of the Flies - I hated that book SO MUCH, I really can't see how anyone can make it palatable. That and A Separate Peace will be ruined forever for me.

I feel your pain. We didn't go to the same English classes, did we?

Ah, Mr. Dandrew's 10th Grade English class: sucking the life out of literature for 30 years! We also did the fascinating Silas Marner. Not a single book in his class did I actually enjoy. And I *like* to read.

I read both in Mr. Smith's 8th grade accelerated English. They're perfectly decent books, had he not been OBSESSED with youth literature concerning teenage boys. See also, The Outsiders, Catcher in the Rye, I Am The Cheese, and Romeo and Juliet. No other Shakespeare, but we spent an entire semester on that.

On the bright side, Ralph Macchio was pretty hot in the movie.

Love your enthusiasm - and love of Pan! anonymous September 2 2008, 03:50:22 UTC
Your excitement truly shines in your words.
Best of luck in all endeavors!
And did you know about the new Peter Pan novel out? It's different than all the other prequels and sequels which all contradict Barrie's original stories. This new book is faithful AND it's based on his idea for more Pan adventure! Pretty cool, huh? Check it out: http://www.peterpansneverworld.com/
Happy reading!

We've been reading Peter and the Starcatchers for book group this month. I've been listening to it, anyway, as it's read by Jim Dale. I like it, but I don't looove it, and I don't know if that's the book, or if that's my not-loving peter pan. I don't think I've read the original and the disney version never interested me, so perhaps I would appreciate this more if I started with the original, hmmmm? Yay for Peeeeeenk.
