Cross-posted to PNN for anyone who's on there:

This is one of the first times I have been truly grateful for living in New York City; I just got back from seeing the limited-release premiere of Food, Inc. It is one of the most frightening, uplifting, important movies I have seen. If you liked "This Film is Not Yet Rated" or "An Inconvenient Truth," ( Read more... )

On a similar note, I'd highly recommend reading "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn if you haven't already. It basically deals with the whole problem of modern society, and why, on our current path, we're doomed to failure. As a preview/hint and an explanation as to why it's relevant to your post, a lot of the problem, as Quinn analyzes it, stems from our agricultural system. It's a bit more daunting, however, as his solution calls for a complete revolution in the way our culture operates. Still, it's an excellent read.

I'll add it to my reading list (I suppose the NYC library system is another thing to be grateful for!)

I'm just now reading "The Omnivore's Dilemma," the book that brought Michael Pollan into the national eye. I like knowing about the big, scary, system wide problems, but I'm more personally moved and motivated by seeing how much can be done with small changes. The speed at which the organic sector and farmer's markets are growing, and other similar food-consciousness movements, make me feel like the revolution is already growing.

While I was standing in line for the movie, someone was passing out flyers for a course on permaculture; I had never heard about it before that, but it sounds like it might fit well with Quinn's book.

A lot of the grocery stores here are starting to carry organic or free range chicken, meat, etc. I'm grateful for it, and I'm trying to buy it as often as possible.

Yes - it's not something I've always tried to do in the past (I've worried more about my milk and eggs, oddly), but will be now; the light-less chicken house with antibiotics in the water was a bit horrifying. I love that better options are becoming so widely available.
