iTunes has an inbuilt mp3 converter - since they got rid of the DRM on downloaded tracks, you just right-click on a song in the menu and say "convert to mp3", whereupon you can play it on anything. It does mean using iTunes for that bit, but if you're buying music from the store anyway it's not such a big deal.
