Manga and novels

I'm considering buying the manga (namely the japanese volumes after ther the ones published in english. I'm not proficient in japanese but I think I can dig some translation out of it :) )
I'm wondering: at what novel (and chapter)the manga is? I've read that the manga follow quite closely the novel ( at last more closely then the anime).

The fact that Gunter is on the cover of Volume 17 has been teaser'd at for a while now, but I don't recall seeing a particularly clear shot of him until now.

Volume 17 goes on sale October 26th!
