Not a meme, for once

Yesterday my mother mentioned that she wanted to watch Howl's Moving Castle again. Never one to turn down a Miyazaki film, I obliged. My mother is one of those people who won't stop asking questions during movies. I hadn't seen the film in a year or two, and in the middle of her questions, I realized that I had some questions of my own.

So, ( Read more... )

It's been awhile since I read the book and saw the movie, so grain of salt.

Howl's contract with Calcifer resulted in his stunted emotional development (Howl gives his heart to sustain Calcifer). Howl turning into a bird was a result of his wizard transformations. IIRC, if you keep transforming, or stay in the form too long, you can't turn back anymore. I'm pretty sure Howl makes a remark on this to Sophie when you first see the wizard-monsters attacking the dirigible.

As for Sophie's curse, it's not explained in the movie. Book wise, it's revealed that her appearance depends on her self confidence. The more she believes in herself, the closer she becomes to reverting to her actual age. So, when she's all confident and, "Howl I'll save you!" she's young, but when she's "I'm so dowdy, I can't help anyone" she turns old(er) again.

I understand that part of the contract with Calcifer. I just wasn't sure if it had additional effects. Yeah, Howl did say that you can't turn back if you remain in the form for too long.

Ah, that makes sense. I thought maybe it had something to do with her own self-image (physically speaking), but if that was the case, I couldn't figure why she changed when talking to Madame Suliman. Self confidence makes more sense.

You know I must have seen the movie a billion times and never noticed that.

Food for thought the next time I watch it.

I even read the book and I don't remember anything about it.

I do remember being so pleased with the book that I wrote a note and tucked it in the book when I gave it back to the library that I hoped that someone else liked it as much as I did lol.

Never noticed what? The part about Sophie's curse.

I only remember that Howl plays rugby, which is probably the most inconsequential thing I could remember in the entire book.

At least it's not just me.

Everyone else I've talked to says they haven't had that problem because they're posting in HTML mode. I tried that, but it keeps switching to "disable auto formatting" when I edit.

Every time I go to edit a post, I have to redo all the line and paragraph breaks, despite what mode I am in! Like you said at least you are not alone with this issue! Hopefully, LJ will get it straightened out soon...;)
