By "old Mac," do you mean "something that runs old MacOS applications?" Or what? Because I may have access to a 15" PowerPC laptop with a nice large RAM footprint that I can arrange to get for essentially free. I don't know yet for sure, but I think so.

If you don't mean that, what do you mean?

Its a now "older" Mac mini with an early OSX on it. It seems to be functioning okay now, but was doing stuff that put the fear in me. It may be okay now, but I'm copying off everything to be sure.

Early OS X would still run MacOS applications, so is that what you're doing and why newer OS X doesn't work? Or are you running OS X, but the applications are PowerPC only?

Backups are always extremely good. I recommend using Time Machine in the _strongest_ of terms. It's really a genuinely good backup system.

The newer OS won't run my older photoshop or word (won't even read old word files)

Also, we finally gave up on our old Accord for basically this sort of reason and got the first current-model-year vehicle either of us have ever had. The cargo and milage are both so much better. We're quite happy with the tradeup, even if it means going to payment mode again. :-p
