I picked up the "Books" section of the Wall Street Journal while at the coffeeshop on Saturday, and I saw this article, "Dire Combustion", about the book The Shakespeare Riots, which tells of the violence that blew up (23 people were killed) around Astor Place in New York City in 1849 ... over Shakespeare. This reminds me of the riots over Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring". Fascinating history! It's so strange how radically the public's perception of and reaction to art changes over the years.
