I picked up the "Books" section of the Wall Street Journal while at the coffeeshop on Saturday, and I saw
this article, "Dire Combustion", about the book The Shakespeare Riots, which tells of the violence that blew up (23 people were killed) around Astor Place in New York City in 1849 ... over Shakespeare. Well, really over issues of class and identity and so on -- read the article, it's very good. The book presumably also provides the context of a time in America when Shakespeare was mass media. We learned a little bit about this in one of my media studies classes -- Shakespeare was a medium in which actors and companies could play, could change, could make current commentary, ... could re-do a soliloquy as many times as the audience called for encores ... because audiences knew Shakespeare by heart, so changes and nuances were not lost on them ... audiences which spanned all segments of society. I really found that stuff interesting, so I think I'll try to read this.
