ADL Week

I have mixed feelings about ADL. It's great what they're trying to do, the messages they're trying to send. I think that some of the things they do are really powerful. What I don't like is how half-hearted some of the members are. The get up to speak to us, and they're talking like, "Yeah, so, racism is bad and stuff. You should, like, think about ( Read more... )

Well, I agree in that aspect. What they were going through was no worse than a parent or teacher being stern, and their reasons for crying are really not reasons at all. But it wasn't so much that as it was people laughing because of the way the girls looked.

That movie made me generally upset. It really did upset me that in a group of college kids non of them had an ego strong enough to stand up and refuse to take it or talk back. Tis a shame if we can't expect those kids to stand up, or for the "browns" to sympathize and be nicer to them.

I was not changed at all upon viewing that movie. I found it generally amusing because that woman was total bullshit. The question that Charlie asked was a real good one, just it wasn't directed at the right person. That old woman obviously hasn't noticed how much better things have become or else she wouldn't bother with such a useless exercise. I mean, not every white person is a full-blown racist and black people are not constantly being discriminated against, but thats how she was acting. We know racism is bad so there is not point in preaching it. If people choose to be racist, no presentation is going to change that. There are not going to be like,"Oh I did not know that before," or something. We're high school students for Christ sake ( ... )

i think its jsut the fact that maybe we're not in dire need of all this education in accepting diversity, simply becuase of the small white town we live in. we all know each other, and there's little diversity, so kids think that it's just all a waste of time and dont take it seriously. they forget, however, that they won't be living in scituate forever, and that in the long run, the ADLreally is teaching us some valuable things.

not to mention our school consists vastly of 12 year olds.
