Bleh, and eye disorders

There's a very resonant irony present in my state of health. Being able to live in Japan during one of the worst outbreaks of H1N1 while not contracting it was a noteworthy feat, but coming home and suddenly being felled by a common cold is annoying comical, and it's worse when I go for checkups and find something rather alarmingly wrong with me. rg_rothko has that problem. She hasn't been able to wear contacts at all for years. Fortunately, she has totally got that hot geek thing going for her:

Thanks, ng_nighthawk. Sadly, I have been off contacts for 9 years. After the evil bumps, I started getting cysts on my eyelids when I wore makeup. At one point, I had over 13 on one eyelid and my eye was completely swollen shut and seeping in very horrible ways. I could almost see out of the other eye (it only had about 9). I wasn't able to drive or anything. I hope you're able to get over it. After re-trying soft contacts and purchasing hard contacts, I am still in glasses. Take care not to put anything on your eyes that could irritate them. You do not want the disgusting cysts.

(This was all around the time when I was also throwing up for 12 hours a day because of allergy-induced labyrinthitis, a really shitty year.)

If you haven't already ordered your glasses, check out http://www.zennioptical.com if you're looking to possibly save some serious coin... I got two pairs of glasses (1 was bifocals, to try 'em out) for $75, including shipping... Everyone I know who's gone through 'em has been well pleased... :o)

That is what kicked me out of contacts as well. I had always intended to go back to wearing them at least part time, but it was never worth the time and money to start up again.

What people are allergic to in cat fur is the dander (which is, I believe, flaky skin) and the best way to minimize that it to spring for the more expensive, human-grade foods that they sell at natural pet stores. The pet store staff can help you pick something out. We use Merrick's brand plus various digestive enzymes and vitamin powders. When their coats are in really good shape, they are not only less allergy causing, but they are soft as bunnies. If they are already eating non-grocery store food, then you will probably be discovering you are less allergic to them that you would be otherwise.

The other part of the dander is an enzyme in their spittle. While the kitties might hate it, frequent bathing in the tub, coupled with a good shampoo may help reduce the allergies as well.

We don't get quite that high of a level of food- just Science Diet. And the reason for that is purely smell- cats smell a lot when they're eating the cheap stuff. Seriously, it's worth springing for some higher-grade food just to minimize the "cats live here" smell.

Robb makes sure that the cats are fed good quality food, and not too much of it either, and I trust him to make the right decision. I'll be seeing my doctor next week, which will let me get a referral to an allergist, which will hopefully let me get allergy shots. With that taken care of, I should be good to go.

Hopefully.
