Chapter 7

Hana couldn’t get out of going to her parent’s house. She really didn’t want to spend her Sunday there. She knew they would ask her about Jun and talking about him was the last thing she wanted. However, she now was having lunch with her mother, ex beauty queen, just FYI. There was also her younger sister, who was, well… pretty much gorgeous and her dad, who she had taken after.

“So, dear, how have you been?” Her father asked.

“Just fine. I’ve had a lot of work lately.”

“That’s good.”

“I was so sorry to hear about you and Matsumoto kun,” her mother said. “I was so looking forward to having grandchildren…”

“Mom…” Hana sighed. She had heard the ‘why don’t you get married and have babies’ speech before and this was not the time.

“Oh, I know sweetheart, you will meet someone else. Are you sure you want have a second serving of that?” She asked when she saw Hana pick up the food platter. She put it back without saying anything.

“Leave her alone, she is fine the way she is,” her father intervened.

Hana simply smiled. Of course her father would say that but her mother was right. She knew how she looked. She was a size 16, at best, and even if she used to be quite confident, mostly, lately she was the complete opposite.

“Of course she is!” Her mother said sounding offended. “Still, sweetheart, it wouldn’t hurt if you lost a couple of pounds. Maybe you can even get Matsumoto kun back.”

“Yeah.” She really, really wanted to go home.

“Don’t listen to mom, you know how she is,” her sister said when they were alone in the kitchen. Hana looked at her sister. The big pretty eyes and the pink perfectly formed mouth, and then looked down at her perfect and slight curves. Still Hana couldn’t be jealous. Her sister was just as nice as she was beautiful… Okay, so maybe she was a little jealous.

Hana sighed, a sad sound. “I know, Kiritani. I’m fine.”

Her sister sat next to her and put her arm around her shoulders and put her head against Hana’s. “Do you want me to go and smack that stupid ex of yours and that slutty cousin of ours?”

Hana laughed. “No, it’s fine.”

That’s when her mother came in. “You know, sweetie, if you can’t patch things up with Matsumoto kun, I know Yamada san’s son is looking for a wife.” And just like that Hana was in a sour mood again.

“Mom!” Her sister shrieked. “He is like 40!”

“43 and looking for a wife. Hana, he would make a good provider…”

“He is also bold and still lives with his mother,” her sister pointed out with a droll look.

“Well, none of us should judge by appearances and first impressions, right Hana? And…”

Her sister and her mother kept on bickering and Hana just tuned them out. She just wanted to go home and did so at the first opportunity.

When she got to her empty apartment, she felt lonely. She sat on her couch looking at her phone. Finally, gathering courage she started typing a message.

At his own apartment, Massu heard his phone; he read the message and smiled.

“Do I look okay?” Lara asked.

“You look fat,” Koyama sulked.

She stuck her tongue out at him. “I do not. Would you hire me?”

Koyama looked her up and down, put his hand on his chin as if thinking really hard. “I would. If I didn’t know you are an illegal alien and if you hadn’t been living under my sink.”

Since she really didn’t know what to answer, she just kept silent and decided to take that as a compliment. When she was heading for the door, Koyama stopped her. “You should tie your hair up.” She lifted her eyebrows in question. “You look pretty with your hair down, too, but I think it will look better in a pony tail.”

She was still not used to his compliments mixed with the snide remarks, let alone without them, but she tied up her hair and let him arrange her bangs.

Then they went out.

Tegoshi was in a flight. Fidgeting and thinking Aimee hadn’t called him yet, even though it only been a couple of days and their last encounter had been… well we all know how it had been. We’ll go back to him later. Let’s just let him simmer for now.

Shige was in his office covered in papers for petitions, lawsuits and affidavits.

Why didn’t they hire new people? He thought. Well, ‘cause they have you to do their bidding.

He knew it wasn’t only him, there were other new lawyers like him but in days such as this… and it was only Monday. And midday, as his grumbling stomach reminded him.

His cell phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Are you hungry?” Just like that, no hello, no name. Still Shige recognized her. Who else could it be? It was like he had heard from no one but her in the last couple of days.

“I’m working.”

“That was not my question. Even if you are working you have to eat, right?”

“Mmhh”

“Was that you or your stomach growling?” She laughed. “Come on, my treat.”

Shige supposed he had to eat and she was already making him smile, though he would never tell her.

“Are you smiling right now?” she asked and then laughed again. “I know you know I am a hoot.”

“Fine.” They agreed on a place to meet and hang up.

“So, tell me about Koyama-kun when you were at school.” Sakurako almost demanded a few moments after they sat on a park bench and started eating the food she had brought.

Shige was getting tired of talking about his friend. “Why don’t you just go and talk to him? I mean, wouldn’t it be better that way?”

“He doesn’t answer my calls,” she pouted.

“Aren’t you worried about him living with another woman?”

“There is nothing going on between them.” Shige wasn’t sure that would be true for long. “And it wouldn’t matter, it wouldn’t work. Koyama-kun will see that.”

She had a set expression and Shige decided to drop it. Crazy woman, he had to stop meeting with her.

Ryo and Yamapi were waiting for Koyama and Lara.

“You didn’t have to come.” Yamashita told his friend making his best to sound nonchalant.

“I know, I wanted to.”

“Well, I have to introduce them to my friend. Nothing too interesting.”

“Pi, what are you trying to hide?” Ryo asked with a smirk.

“Nothing! I’m not hiding anything.”

“I bet it’s a hot girl and you are afraid I’m gonna steal her from you.”

Yamapi rolled his eyes. “Yeah, I’m terrified.” Though that was a possibility. God knew she was not attracted to him apparently… maybe he wasn’t her type… Maybe Ryo was more her type.

Ryo watched his friend frown. He had been joking but apparently he had hit a nerve. And now he knew there really was a hot girl.

He was about to say something but Koyama and Lara arrived and he decided to wait until later.

“Hey, looking nice… though I would have gone for more cleavage.”

“Yeah, I’m sure you would have,” Lara closed her jacket a bit more. “Hello, Yamashita kun. Thank you for this.”

“I thought it was easier for you if you forgot the honorifics,” he chuckled. “Lara, it’s my pleasure. Shall we?”

Lara nodded and they walk a block to the restaurant.

When they reached the place, Lara started to sweat. It was huge and gorgeous. There were clear divisions: One area with small padded white stools and white coffee tables where people obviously could have drinks; then, there were tables with white and black cloths and stylish center pieces and there was a more private area with divisions to give privacy to the customers eating there.

This was way too fancy, Lara thought, she was never getting the job.

“Relax, you’ll be fine,” Koyama whispered next to her. Man, she had said that at loud? Right when she was starting to think he wasn’t such a bad guy, he added: “You have to get it ‘cause you have to find your own place and get out of mine.”

She was glaring up at the giant oaf when a feminine bubbly yet husky voice greeted them.

Lara turned around to the owner of the voice. She was stunning. She had dark hair with a reddish hue. Big almond shaped eyes a cute little nose which was not too big, nor too small, and red lips set in a perfect bow.  And man, Lara wished she could get her make up like that.

The woman was as tall as Yamashita and she was wearing flats. She was also curvy and with great legs. Great rack… Great, Lara though, now she was becoming Ryo.

“Hello, Yamashita Kun, how are you?” She said. “And this must be your friends.”

“Yes. Eika chan, this is Koyama, Ryo and this is Lara. She’s is the girl looking for a job.”

“Oh, Yamashita told me about what happened to you. I was so sorry for you. I’m glad I can help.”

So not only was she gorgeous, she was also nice. Damn, women this beautiful should be bitches.

“Thank you, Eika chan,” Yamashita said. Oh yes, this was the woman he had been talking to on the phone. They would be very cute together, actually.

The woman smiled. “My pleasure. Come this way, Lara san?”

“Just Lara is fine.”

Eika laughed “Okay. Come Lara, I’ll introduce you to the owner.”
