Chapter 8
Aimee was just staring at her cell phone now. She should call him. But then again, he had looked so mad.

Well, she would be mad too. You found an old one night stand and she is pregnant. Well it had been more than one night but the sentiment was the same.

Yes, both of them had said things but she blamed it on the place. They were on the beach, just the two of them and they got carried away.

The sun was behind him obscuring his features but she could see his eyes. She was lying under the sun and he was supporting his weight on his arms and he leaned down and gave her a lingering kiss.

He looked down at her and smiled. “I’ve never felt this way, with anybody.”

Her heart was racing. Was he serious?

“You don’t have to say anything,” he had turned serious too. “I just wanted to… yeah.”

“I haven’t felt this way either.” He kissed her again.

She shook her head to clear the memory. Okay, if she was being honest with herself, she had meant her words and she had thought of him practically every day since the last time they had seen each other. The baby was a huge reminder, to be honest.

It wasn’t the same for him. He had probably left everything behind when he left. He was probably still with his girlfriend. Oh, god, did that made her a home wrecker?

“Stop thinking that much, your head is gonna explode.” She turned to look at Kame and again felt bad about the way he looked. His eyes were purple and his nose was all swollen, which made his voice completely nasal and a little whiny.

“I’m fine.”

“I never said you weren’t but you have been looking at your phone for the past 15 minutes and muttering to yourself.”

“I wasn’t muttering.”

“You said ‘looked mad’ then ‘it was more than one night,’ then you growled: ‘girlfriend’…”

“I did not growl.”

Kame ignored that. “And then you said home wrecker.” He paused. “You are not a home wrecker, he is a cheater.”

Aimee sighed. She had had this conversation before and wasn’t in the mood to have it again even with her best friend.

“Eat,” he ordered.

She grabbed her packed lunch. It was a sandwich since she hadn’t felt like making anything more elaborate that morning. It was neatly wrapped. She opened the edges and removed the wrapping. Then she folded it in exactly half and then another half and then another. She took a sandwich and noticed a part of the filling was sticking out. She rearranged it so that the perfect bread square had no edges and started eating.
“You should just forget about the guy, sweetie.”

When she had accepted the job, she had had no idea that she was pregnant. She found out the first day of work and that’s when she had met Kame and they had become almost instant friends. Well, right after she had burst into tears when he had said “I bet you are nervous on your first day, huh?” She just started crying so he took her to one of the storage rooms, listened to her ramble on about her problems.

“Please not now.”

“Fine. Do you have that doctor’s appointment on Friday?” She nodded. “Do you want me to go with you? We get off at the same time.”

“That’s okay, I can go alone.”

“Sure? You know I love seeing our baby. He’s going to look just like you… maybe a bit more Asian, but just like you.”

She laughed. “You can’t know that. And it may be a she.”

“Boy, definitely a boy.”

She just laughed shaking her head and went back to eating.

“She did great,” Eika was saying trying hard not to look at Yamashita.

“So did she get the job?” Koyama asked and Eika realized he was doing the same thing as her, trying not to stare at someone, more precisely Lara. They were sitting at a café and he kept looking out the window, obviously ignoring her. Eika could only hope she wasn’t being that obvious.

“I did. So I’ll be out of your apartment in no time.”

“Well, as long as you don’t have the papers for your visa you can’t rent out a place, can you?” Ryo point out with an innocent look, so innocent it went all the way to mischievous. So this one liked to cause trouble, Eika thought repressing a chuckle.

“Um, well no… but…” Lara started

“Yes, yes, I know. I’m stuck with her for who knows how many months.” The guy seemed honestly angry about that. But he seemed to like her… What did she know? She couldn’t even figure out her own mind, what made her think she could get into someone else’s.

“Hey, it’s not like I’m happy about it either! I have to put up with your attitude.”

Now he looked at her. “It’s my house I can have whatever attitude I want!”

“Well, I’ll start paying part of the rent, how about that?”

He rolled his eyes and went back to looking out the window. Apparently he couldn’t think of a comeback.

“Eika chan, thank you.” She looked down when she heard Yamashita’s voice.

“Like I said, I’m happy to help.” And then, because she thought she had to at some point, she looked at him and smiled a little. “And Lara did most of it. My boss wouldn’t have hired her and agreed to help her if he hadn’t liked her.”

Ryo was looking at two of his best friends and one of her new friends and wanted to smack them all in the head. Maybe even this new girl here, too.

While Koyama did his best to shut Lara out, she snapped at him. He wanted to yell at him that not all women were opportunistic bitches and to tell her to finally jump his friend’s bones like there is no tomorrow cause they both needed to get laid… by the other.

And then there was Yamapi… who still thought he could keep things from Ryo. The guy was head over heels and the woman, Eika, was doing her best to hide she wasn’t much better.

He wondered what was wrong with them. He didn't see a wedding ring on the woman so why weren't they together? Things should be simpler: you liked something, you get it, you buy it, you steel it or you sleep with it. If only his friends were that straight forward. Idiots.

Yamashita and Lara had a nice talk while they were all walking back and before Ryo and Yamapi said good night.

"He's not really like that you know?"

"Huh?" Lara didn't know what he was talking about.

"Koyama. He is completely different, or he used to be completely different and there is a reason for the change."

"Oh," Lara said without really knowing what to do with that.

"I'm not going to tell more for now. It was just so you are not too put off by his attitude towards you. It's not you personally... Well maybe a bit... the sink thing is hard to forget I guess. But really..."

"It's not just me....It's every woman..."

Yamashita nodded reluctantly. "Except his mother I guess," he finished with a wince.

"Much better..."

"Just be patient with the guy."

"Look, I appreciate you telling me this but it's unnecessary. I'll try to stay out of his way and I'll leave as soon as I can and probably he won't want to see me again... Though I would miss you guys if I didn't see you again... even Ryo with his ogling."

Yamashita laughed softly.

Sakurako went into her apartment. It was small, only one room and a bathroom. The kitchen was shared but she didn’t mind it since she rarely cooked anymore.

Most people would have moved out into a real apartment but she liked it there. It was filled with students and interesting people and she could always go to the common areas when she was feeling lonely... which was pretty much all the time.

She lay down putting her hands behind her head. What should her next move be? She had asked a lot of questions about Koyama kun but somehow they always ended up talking about other things.

That Shige guy was very smart and funny too. Yes, he did act like an old man sometimes but even that was endearing. And he had a great smile. She sighed; he would be a great boyfriend. To somebody else, of course.

The phone rang. She answered and repressed a moan when she heard her mother's voice.

"Hi, sweetheart. How are you?"

"Hi mom. I'm fine. How are you?"

"Fine, I guess. Tell me about you. Are you going out with someone?"

"Oh, um, not really but..."

"Good for you, sweetheart. You don't need a man. If had realized that sooner." That meant her mother had broken up with her newest boyfriend. "You know what your so called father did?" Ah, second option, her father had angered her mother with something he'd done. Never mind they had been divorced for years now. "He's still dating that elementary school girl." The 'elementary girl' was actually 24. "And you know what? They are trying to get pregnant! At his age! What? Like the child I suffered to give him was not enough? All my years slavering in that marriage..."

And that was the real reason of the call, to complain about her father. And bring back memories of her childhood to boot. The screaming, the recriminations on both part.

But it was okay now. She knew the reason now. Her parents insisted on going against the cosmos. Their charts don't match and their numerology was just messed up. She would NOT make the same mistake. Ever. EVER.

"Okay, your turn to ask." Massu said over the phone. He was trying to sound calm but he was just so excited that she had called. They had been texting but it was much nicer to hear her voice.

"Okay. Mmhh... Oh, I know. And this is very important. What did you think of Trina Turk's collection?"

"Mh. Tough question. I tend to like styles which are brighter but the print selection and combination was bold and there were such great cuts."

"Wow, I didn't expect you would actually answer that one," she laughed.

"I told you I was into fashion."

"You did."

"I hope you will show me your designs sometime."

"Maybe. Okay, your turn."

"Pay attention, this is important and it could affect our friendship in the future. Favorite food to cook."

"That's easy. Gyoza. I love to cook it and eat it. It's my favorite."

"Okay, you are just saying that!?"

"No, honestly. I don't get tired of it."

"You are the perfect girl." Massu heard Hana laughed with a smile on his face.

Later, that night, Massu went to bed, sent a text saying good night to Hana.

Tegoshi... needs more simmering. Don't worry, I'll tell you when you can stick a fork in him cause he's done.

And, sitting in front of the TV, Lara and Koyama watched the drama while slurping noodles. It seemed that, if nothing else, they agreed on their taste on TV programs. It was the moment when there was no bickering, when the silence was not awkward but amicable.

During a break for advertizing, Lara resettled on the couch, her feet up while hugging her legs to her torso. “I meant what I said before,” she commented after a few seconds.

“What?”

“That I would pay rent.”

Koyama answered with a noncommittal grunt.

“Honestly. I don’t expect to live for free or off you… And.., I’ll pay for the food I’ve been taking all this time…”

Koyama looked sideways and then immediately went back to the TV when he realized she was looking at him.

“It’s fine. I wouldn’t know how calculate all that anyway and as far as the rent goes… You probably won’t make much money at first… and if you are to leave this place you probably need to save money… and it’s not like I need help paying the rent.” He shrugged.

Lara tried and failed to hide a smile.

“What?” He asked defensively.

“You actually ARE a good guy.”

“No, I’m not. And shut up.”

“You are a nice guy,” she sang while poking at his sides with her bare foot, which he promptly swatted away.

“Eeww. Stop that! Feet are disgusting.”

Lara gasped feigning offense. “My feet are not disgusting,” Lara challenged while still poking him.

“Hey!” He grabbed her foot and pulled it towards him until she was lying on the couch and now he was poking her sides making her squeal.

“Stop, stop. I’m sorry!” She said in a fit of laughter. “I won’t poke you again, I swear.”

He stopped, still smiling down on her. She let a few more chuckles, remnants of him tickling her.

Two heart beats later he stood up. “I’m going to bed. It’s getting late.”

“Th- the show’s not over yet.”

“I’ll just watch the recaps.” With that he walked to his room and Lara kept watching the TV not paying attention to what was going on with the main characters at all.

Another update.

Updates don't come very often for this story. For some reason it's hard for me to write it! I wonder if it's worth it... Anyway, let me know what you think!

Thank you for reading even if it takes forever to update! xD
