Prologue

She was sitting in front of the small train station, the only one in the small town where she lived. She had waited inside for a long time but the train was delayed. Some sort of accident on the track, but nothing to worry about. It was hot so she decided to go buy something cold. She walked leisurely sipping from the bottle. This warm weather was an exception more than the rule in that usually cold part of the country. She went to sit on the blue wooden bench the stood directly opposite the entrance to the station letting the sun light drench her.
She never really missed her hometown, but she did miss the sun and the warm days where she would go out and play as a child. Other than that, she preferred this small town to the much bigger city she used to live in. People were nicer. She had made more real friends in the first months there than she had ever made in high school. She did miss one person, even if she told herself not to.

She forced herself to sit still and not to fidget with her hair, her hands, her white skirt, or anything her hands could fidget with. She hadn’t seen him in a year. She could probably count the times they had talked on the phone in that time with one hand, if she felt inclined to do so, which she absolutely didn’t. It didn’t matter anymore; it was always the same with them. Even if they hadn’t talk in a year, when they met each other they could talk as if they had seen each other the day before. Even after rough times and bitter fights, they would always be… well, them.

In the last month they had talked almost every day, however. They had been planning his trip. He was going to stop at her house since “it has been too damn long since she had lost her mind and moved to the middle of nowhere” as he had put it. And apparently he had something to tell her.

So, here she was, sitting on the blue bench with her white skirt, make up on and hair curled to meet him.

She saw him as soon as he stepped out of the station. He looked exactly the same and completely different at the same time. His hair was shorter and he looked thinner, a lot thinner, his cheeks a little hollowed.

She stood up and smiled waving at him. He gave her his signature sideway smile and waved back. With a bag on his hand, he started to cross the street.

The car came out of nowhere, going too fast, doing erratic zigzags. Neither of them saw it in time. Before she even knew what was going on, she heard the impact, on the car first, then the windshield and then against the pavement as his body rolled as a rag doll and stopped, just lying there. Somewhere in her brain she registered the screech tires and another impact, this time metal on metal as the car went hood first against a post and stopped.

Maki didn’t even bother looking or even hesitating while she ran to where Yamashita was lying on the floor, a small pool of blood forming. She went down on her knees next to him.

“Call an ambulance,” she said to the small crowd that was starting to form and then turned her attention back to the man lying on the floor. She checked vital signs. He was still alive. He was on his back and she didn’t attempt to move him lest she made any possible injury to his spinal cord worse.

She put her hand on his cheek. “Pi. Pi, can you hear me?”

Nothing.

“Tomohisa!”

He opened his eyes, one of which was starting to swell, and looked at her with a hazy and barely focused stare. “You’ll be fine, just hang in there for me, okay? You’ll be fine.” He didn’t answer, didn’t move.

He blinked almost in slow motion. Once, twice. As he closed his eyes one last time his whole world went cold and black, the ambulance sirens could be heard approaching in the distance.

So? What do you think?
