I almost went to see Letters from Iwo Jima last night, but opted for Pan's Labyrinth instead. At only 103 seats, I ended up in the front row - that compounded with the subtitles took something away from the experience, so will have to follow my instincts more this time. Am insterested in seeing this movie (haven't seen Flags of Our Fathers yet) since I was reading about Iwo Jima on my own in elementary school. It is good to see that more historical recognition is being given to past conflicts as opposed to the more traditional depictions.
Funny those were the two films we were pondering over, and opted for the least brain-scrambling of the two. I really really want to see Pan's Labyrinth; got to see some props from it a the Arclight in Hillywood. Totally cool.
I've been waiting to see this until M gets home. It looks awesome, but I want a native guide, even if she'll spend half the movie hiding behind my hand. I have read a bit on the Kempetai, but don't really know much about them, other than that they were something like the FBI, the Army Corps of Engineers, the NKVD and the Gestapo all in one, happy yellow package. With swords.
