last nite me and sokkmonkey went to see
LETTERS HOME FROM IWO JIMA

it was really good.
i liked it.
i'd recommend it to anyone that would like to spend a couple of hours watching a movie.

i was expecting something like 'letters home from vietnam'
though different war, different race, of course.

a lot better than 'flags of our fathers'.
even though i didn't fully pay attention to that movie, it just didn't keep me enthralled enough to not change the channel (on the airplane).

some of this movie did seem a little patronizing
(by that i mean the dramatic bits that we're forced to witness to reinforce the idea that we are giving our once enemy a human face).

funny bits: shoot the medics! americans will risk many lives for this man!

there are also parts that i'm not sure most lay-people would get
(in regards to the kempetai for one. i have a pretty niced size collection of books stored on the subject, but i'm curious to know how many people have it in their everyday vocabulary).

it's really interesting to note how one's side can so easily shift.
we start out following the japanese soldiers at work on iwo jima digging trenches for the encroaching armies of america. and yet, we (as people watching the film in america) know that they're the enemy. but then there are only some limited scenes featuring americans. some about to die, some dumb, some deadly.

i guess it would be hard to get attached to any of the characters, knowing the final outcome of it all.
