Sleep, that blessed arrangement...

Two nights ago, the babe went to bed at 11:30pm and slept for three whole hours. It was wonderful. She then woke up every hour for the rest of the night, but that three hour stretch pulled me through. She also slept in until eleven, which meant I got to have a leisurely breakfast and wake-up slowly ( Read more... )

I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you (falling asleep is Jacob's big problem), although since I've been there you have buckets of my sympathy.

Re: milk supply and hunger, how big is she now? Jacob is roughly 18 pounds, and while I'm not finding that my supply has dwindled, he definitely needs to eat every 2 hours almost around the clock to be satisfied (and that wasn't true for a long time). If she likes and can eat crackers or biscuits, or if she can feed herself a bottle, maybe keeping one nearby in the night?

*hugs*

Sympathy is always appreciated ;)

I've thought about feeding her a solid snack in the middle of the night, but don't want the mess in the bed and I'm a little scared to wake her so fully for fear that she won't go back to sleep. I think we're just going to make sure she eats a big late dinner and see how that goes.

She goes through phases (at three months she consistently slept for five hours or more at a stretch) so it's not like she's been waking every hour since birth, thankfully. She liked sleeping on us as a newborn, and still likes to do that, but at 20lbs and 28 inches having her on top of us gets uncomfortable pretty quickly these days. And it never worked that well for me, since being that close to the boobs makes her want to nurse--same issue as cuddling in general actually.

We're definitely going to make a point of giving her a large late solid supper. It seemed to help somewhat last night, so we'll see how it goes.

[Like the Librarian in The Music Man, here I am again, offering advice when -- yep, no husbandchildren here! Please feel welcome to tell me to hush up.]

Your suspicions about hunger -- perhaps her evening meal is too rapidly digestible? (The "Chinese takeout" effect.) A meal digested slower may let her sleep longer without being wakened by hunger/sensation of empty belly/low blood sugar. Fortunately the notion of a slow meal meshes nicely with trying big meals.

You could try an experiment: eat the same sort of evening meal that she does, and see when you get hungry. Actually, probably maxemulien should try the experiment :-) -- like Raine, he's eating for just one ( ... )
