Sleep, that blessed arrangement...

Two nights ago, the babe went to bed at 11:30pm and slept for three whole hours. It was wonderful. She then woke up every hour for the rest of the night, but that three hour stretch pulled me through. She also slept in until eleven, which meant I got to have a leisurely breakfast and wake-up slowly ( Read more... )

[Like the Librarian in The Music Man, here I am again, offering advice when -- yep, no husbandchildren here! Please feel welcome to tell me to hush up.]

Your suspicions about hunger -- perhaps her evening meal is too rapidly digestible? (The "Chinese takeout" effect.) A meal digested slower may let her sleep longer without being wakened by hunger/sensation of empty belly/low blood sugar. Fortunately the notion of a slow meal meshes nicely with trying big meals.

You could try an experiment: eat the same sort of evening meal that she does, and see when you get hungry. Actually, probably maxemulien should try the experiment :-) -- like Raine, he's eating for just one.

Compared with trying a bigger meal, it is trickier to discover what makes for a Raine-approved slower meal. On the other hand, the body obviously can adapt to efficiently digest a larger quantity, but may be stymied trying to speed up the digestion of new chemistry. In the late evening I like rough whole-grain bread with butter, cheese-sticks, lunch meat, a spoonful of unsweetened nut-butter, olives, black beans... Ummmm, okay, perhaps I should point out (pretending that it's not already obvious) that I don't have a clue what little ones eat :-P Probably the easiest solution for the household is: whatever works that Dad and Mom like.

Good luck! :)
