I am a sucky teacher. That sucks. I just finished my second day of Drama I section and I feel like crap. Perhaps I should rewind for a moment and contextualize this journal. I am lucky enough to be a dramaturge at the American Repertory Theatre, for which I am not only immensely thankful, but paying a lot to be immensely thankful. In order to ( Read more... )

Katie, don't let the first couple of classes you teach bother you too much. They are always the hardest. Trust me, the more you do it, the easier it gets. Your going to be a great teacher. With that said, if you need anything or just want to talk always feel free to call me. Maybe we can figure out a way to engage your class a little more;) Hope everything else is going well for you in Boston and that I hear from you sometime soon. Don't get too stressed out.

Alsion, as per usual I totally agree with you. First of all this teacher probobly has a point. I too agree that the education system in our country is changing. NOT FAILING. The problem with it is, that you have a career that is next to impossible to get started in. You either have state's that require insane amounts of education and certificates to teach or you have none at all. But what you lose are people who will teach because they love teaching. Who will teach to change ONE PERSON ( ... )

Dave, that TOTALLY made sense. Right on.

"The difference between this guy being a bad teacher and being a good teacher is wether or not you can sit there and take something away from it."

SO SMART. Good call, man. I will probably think about that statement for the rest of my life. Like... two people could sit in the same classroom with the same teacher... one chose to feel defeated, one chose to get over that feeling and work with the criticism. Ten years later those two students will have opposing ideals as to whether this teacher was the best or worst in the business! I'm saving that one to tell my kids!

P.S. Katie... one of the things I had to delete the other day (my entry was too big!) was that one of the things I LOVE about you is your desire to learn. I share that desire (nerds for life!) and talking to you on the phone the other day really confirmed for me that your head is one hundred percent straight when it comes to this.
