Actually, if you can find some really authentic Mexican .. like real tacos al carbon, the dish does not come with cheese. It's corn tortillas, steak with onions, cilantro, salsa (or most likely a pico), and a bit of lime. If it has side dishes it'll be refried beans, and spanish style rice. Best meal ever. <3

The stuff with a load of cheese is usually Tex-Mex or some sort of Mexican fusion, unless it's like that Mexican creamy cheese. I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head.

There's only a couple Mexican restaurants around here that I consider to be authentic or close to authentic. I know that sounds strange living in California. SoCal might be different though.

Most of the places around here are taquerias. Bah.

I think I know what cheese you are talking about...like fresca quesa or something?

Yeah, that places.

Ahh like tiny hole in the wall taquerias where nothing is in english and the staff barely speaks english? Those are usually the best.

I don't think it's strange that it is hard to find real mexican in cali. It can get that way in Texas, because of our Tex-Mex fusion. Also, it can be a bit unnerving here for a non-hispanic to go into a real Mexican restaurant because of the social tensions down here. You can get some really ugly glances. Kind of like when Texas was full of cowboys, any "foreigner" (someone not from Texas) was pretty much given the same wary, piercing eye.
