Still in the Refrigerator?

I am in a superhero kind of mood today.

I was doing some...ah, research, and revisited the Women in Refrigerators website. I don't know if it's the fact that it's over 10 years since that list was posted, but I dug a little deeper this time and read some of the writer/creator responses and...wow. It's kind of appalling. I'm particularly disappointed ( Read more... )

Gunnerkrigg Court! It's probably my favorite webcomic.

Wonderella is not very narrative-y, but she certainly kicks butts.

In real-world-comics, "Nextwave" was weird and goofy fun, and it had three female to one male and one robot male main characters.

I'm not all that up on mainstream superhero comics, I'm afraid.

Cool, thanks!

I'm not as up on them as I used to be, and find myself generally more interested in things like DC's Vertigo line and Dark Horse's stuff. (Also, Joe Hill's "Locke & Key".)

Alas, I have a deep found love for superheroes, and hate to see things play out like this.

"Locke & Key" is awesome, but you didn't ask for awesome in general...

("Ex Machina" and the Astro City line are both awesome in a generalized way, and Astro City sometimes has kick-butt female protags. Just not all the time, and most of the grand epics focus on males.)

You know about Birds of Prey, right? DC's all-female (99% of the time) superteam, written by Gail Simone, the woman who wrote the WIR essay?

You know, I knew Simone had done some cool stuff, but hadn't realized Birds of Prey was among it. Any recommendations on where to begin, or just dive in at the beginning?

Her run on the first series of BoP, which is all collected, was #s 56-108; the series floundered and was briefly cancelled after she went other books, but she came back for the relaunch started just about a year ago. I'd start at the beginning--you can get them at the library if nowhere else--but you could also just pick up the new series to see if it grabs you.

Reading some of those responses flat-out pissed me off, to be honest.
