Before the Crazy Rabbi With the Scourge of Chords Shows Up

As a Christian, I'm getting really pissed off reading and listening to other Christians not only question Barack Obama's faith, but outright deny it to him.  Reasons he can't be a Christian vary from his middle name to his last name to questions about his ethnicity (is he an Arab? *Gasp*) to questions about his prior religious beliefs (he used to ( Read more... )

As an atheist who appreciates many of the basic tenets of Christianity, thank you for the reminder that Christ's teachings are founded on ideals of love, compassion, and inclusion.

I really would like to. Although from what I've heard, I'm pretty sure the ending is going to blow the whole thing for me. Still, I do want to see it.

If you know Bill Maher and are familiar with his views, there is nothing in the movie that will surprise you. You don't go to this movie thinking it's going to be an affirmation of all you believe and hold dear. He's an atheist scoffing not only Christianity but the hypocrisy inherent in all the major religions.
He makes some excellent points--many points you yourself have made both over the course of LJ comments and within FH. He just takes it further, harder. In the end, yes, he does say that humanity is doomed unless religion dies; but the subtler point is that he's talking about RELIGION, and not necessarily the spiritual nature of humanity (though I imagine he would scoff at that too.) Religion is a manmade thing prone to mankind's corruption. Within all his scoffing and eyerolling, THIS, I believe, is the most relevant point he makes.

I am with you on that one. If you've got a beef with someone, come up with reasons that center around issues, ideology, our or even personality.

Totally. We may not agree on a person's platform but to question someone's faith is really an incredibly prideful thing to do. (Pride as in the sin, not the honor.)

And not only that, but when he is (black) Christian, but he goes to a (black) church, where his (black) preacher is so (black) anti-American as to dare to suggest that blacks haven't had the easiest time in America.

And did I mention that he's black?

I think you might've let it slip. But yeah, that pisses me off, too.
